This has been said a million times on a million platforms and here I say it again. We are in the age of unlimited content. Our lives have been taken over by social media, sharing content and creating an online presence. So much content, so little time that we whip out our phone every 5 min wanting to see it all.
Instagram used to allow posting only one photo at a time. Do you remember those days when a single photo was carefully curated, made worthy to post?
Today we can post a maximum of 10 photos/videos at a time. Great right? But there is a flip side to the time and effort it now takes to make an Instagram post. Even though I know I can stop at 1, I want to post more than 1, at least 5. Now I’m spending a lot of time curating 5 pictures to make 1 post. I am spending time on the filters and theme of the post, making sure I choose the best 5. In the end, I posted nothing. Because I’m unhappy with the 5 or just saturated with the effort.
Where I could have chosen just one good picture, I need to choose 5 good pictures. No compromise. That need is my creation aided by the boost of serotonin.
Even when scrolling, I instinctively look for the tiny icon on the top right of a post to see if there is more to swipe. I look for more, I want more. This has just increased the amount of time I spend on Instagram.
It’s funny how we hardly notice such big changes.
